The Inuyasha Narrative, Part 28: Magatsuhi’s Role
Translation provided by: Robby Stine of Kanabits

Inuyasha Wideban Extra Vol 28 Magatsuhi, the Absolute Evil.

As the story reached its end, Magatsuhi made his appearance. His name and general existence had come up here and there for quite a while, but it wasn’t until the end that he appeared in the flesh. In comparison to Naohi, which contains the spirit of good, Magatsuhi is a being of darkness and evil. The spirits soiled by the evil within the Shikon jewel borrowed a part of Naraku’s body and formed a physical being, and that being was Magatsuhi. What sort of being was he? It’s been so long that I don’t really remember myself. He wasn’t being controlled by Naraku, nor was he one of his aspects. I mean, it was through Naraku that he was able to appear, and he did use Naraku’s body to take physical form, but he wasn’t an aspect. Naraku was an emotional being, and was very human in other ways as well, but Magatsushi didn’t have any part of himself like that, which set him apart from Naraku. He was evil incarnate. That said, he never did anything evil to regular citizens. He tried to seal Kagome’s power, and he possessed a few people. That’s it. Magatsuhi allowed me to write stories that pushed Sango to better recognize her feelings for Miroku, and helped heal Kohaku’s heart from the guilt of his past. But what exactly was it that Magatsuhi himself was trying to accomplish?

What in the world was Magatsuhi trying to accomplish?

Magatsushi was a purer evil than Naraku, but we never knew what his goal actually was. Except that he wanted to do something bad. He fought with Sesshomaru, as well as Inuyasha and the gang, but he never really did anything else. He seemed to be after Kohaku’s Shikon shard, but he never got it. Naraku did. He did help in sullying the Shikon shards Kikyo had previously purified, though. He may have been the least useful character to me in the series. I thought he’d be able to do something if I just put him in the story, but other than his dramatic first appearance, I couldn’t really do anything with him. I still tried to get as much out of him as I could, though, since we were near the end of the story. I just wish I’d been able to make him leave a bigger impression.

Actually, Magatsuhi did have an important role.

However, thanks to Magatsuhi, Sesshomaru’s left arm was able to make a recovery, and Bakusaiga was able to be born. When I think about it that way, I suppose Magatsuhi was a meaningful character. He had a place in the story after all, and it was to provide Sesshomaru with the chance to get Bakusaiga before the final battle. He did good work in that regard, didn’t he?
